Turning Good Ideas into Great Business!

Over thirty students, graduates and staff from universities and colleges across Mid Wales took part in Business Start-up Week 2010 held at Aberystwyth University from 7th-11th June. 

Coordinated by the Enterprise team in Commercialisation and Consultancy Services (CCS) the programme consisted of ten sessions held over the five days, providing dynamic and interactive workshops in key business skills. 

Expert speakers presented on a range of topics from ‘The Art of Networking’ to ‘Financial Planning’ and ‘Marketing’.   Attendees also heard first hand from graduates who have gone on to develop successful businesses with support from the University’s Enterprise team.

Included in the programme was a visit to Technium Aberystwyth, who as sponsors of the week, provided entrepreneurs with the opportunity to view the purpose built facilities for young science and technology businesses in Aberystwyth’s Marina.

 “In addition to a package of essential business skills training, the Business Start-up week provides individuals with a fantastic networking opportunity to meet likeminded entrepreneurs and build a support network to draw on when taking their business idea forward.” explained Tony Orme, Commercial Spinout Manager and organiser of the week.

For those individuals keen to turn their good idea into a great business, the Enterprise team from CCS were on hand to signpost other business start-up services including the package of mentoring support offered to eligible students / graduates through the Graduate Start-Up Support (GSS) scheme and Spinout Support Framework through Aberystwyth University.

First year student Chris O’Dea spoke enthusiastically about taking part in the week, “The sessions were informative, entertaining, empowering and inspiring – a complete toolbox for turning ideas into goals, goals into reality and action into accomplishment – recommended if you want to turn your dreams into a business reality”

If you missed out on the most recent Start-up week, you will be pleased to know that the event will now be held biannually, with the next ‘business boot camp’ to be held at Aberystwyth University in January.
