Procedure for Appointing Emeritus Professors
Principles & Procedure
- The conferment of the title Emeritus Professor is recommended by the University’s Staffing Committee, for ratification by Senate and Council.
- The appointment of Emeritus Professors will be considered at each scheduled Staffing Committee Meeting during the Academic year, as appropriate.
Criteria
- The conferment of the title of Emeritus Professor at Aberystwyth University is dependent upon two factors:
- That the individual holds a Chair in the University;
- That the individual should be in the process of retiring from employment with the University.

Procedure
- The Department of Human Resources will present the Staffing Committee with a report at each Committee Meeting detailing each Professor approaching their retirement within the following three month period.
- Staffing Committee will give consideration to each appointment and the Department of Human Resources will confirm the Staffing Committee’s decision to the Department and Individual concerned.
General guidelines
- The conferment of the title Emeritus Professor is an honorary position and does not therefore entitle an individual to access University resources over and above those already available to retired employees. Departments may, however, choose to make other facilities and Departmental resources available at their discretion.
