E-learning at Aberystwyth University
At Aberystwyth University, we are committed to the appropriate use of information and communications technology (ICT) as a means of improving access to learning and enhancing the quality and effectiveness of the learning and teaching experience.
A wide range of support is available for e-learning tools and pedagogies. We provide training materials, courses and one-to-one consultations for staff using AberLearn Blackboard or other e-learning tools as part of their teaching and research. FAQs and helpsheets are also available to students using e-learning in their courses.
One of the key areas in which Information Services supports technology-enhanced learning and teaching is through AberLearn Blackboard. AberLearn Blackboard is a web-based Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that provides access to course materials, announcements and interactive tools such as discussion boards, blogs, wikis and podcasts. AberLearn Blackboard is available to all registered users (staff and students) and can be accessed through a standard Web browser at http://blackboard.aber.ac.uk.
The E-learning Team are involved in a wide-range of activities to support the development of technology-enhanced learning. In 2007 we took part in the Higher Education Academy's E-learning Benchmarking programme (the blog of activities undertaken is available at http://benchmarking.aber.ac.uk/) and between 2008 and 2010 we worked on the Gwella project.
The E-learning Team has been involved in the introduction of a number of new systems to support technology-enhanced teaching and learning, including Questionmark Perception (for online assessment), AberCast (for lecture recording), the Qwizdom interactive voting system and SafeAssign (for plagiarism detection and prevention). We work closely with the Centre for the Development of Staff and Academic Practice, particularly through the PGCTHE programme.
The Team is also responsible for the implementation of the university's E-learning Strategy.
