External Sources of Funding

British Council

International students are strongly encouraged to approach the British Council in their home countries at the earliest date possible to enquire about assistance. The British Council administers a number of awards (e.g.the British Chevening Scholarships) for the British Government, international organisations and multinational corporations. In addition, most British Council offices will have a library of resources that you can use to find out about independent charities and trusts that may have scholarships to award in your chosen field of study.

British Chevening Scholarships

British Chevening Scholarships are awarded to international students with excellent academic backgrounds who wish to pursue postgraduate study in the UK.  The scholarships are primarily for those who wish to undertake a taught Masters degree. Candidates should be aware that the deadline to apply for a Chevening Scholarship in some countries may be very early indeed.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme (CSSS)

(Students from developing Commonwealth countries only)

N.B. Deadline for 2012 has now passed. Please note that the bidding process for the 2013 scholarships has not been finalised, therefore we cannot guarantee the availability of this award for 2013.

The University participates in the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme which makes awards for full-time taught Masters students. The award is intended to assist a student from a developing Commonwealth country who has the requisite academic background but cannot afford the tuition fee and is not eligible for any other British Government award. The award covers tuition fees, the costs of travel to and from the UK and provides a living allowance. Students do not apply for these awards; nominations are made from among the applications received by the institution. Do not therefore submit an application via the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission's EAS system. We will only consider candidates who have submitted formal applications for their place of study.

Students interested in staring their Masters course in September 2013 should apply for the place of study before 1st March 2013. Please contact the Postgraduate Admissions Office for further details about the 2013 competition or see the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission's website. Please note that for the 2013 competition, the award will only be available for students following one of the relevant Masters courses with either the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences or the Department of Information Studies or on the new MSc Food & Water Security course, although this is subject to confirmation.
