Information Studies

The world of information is an area of rapid expansion. Social and technological advances of recent years have transformed Library and Information Studies and Information Management into dynamic, multi-disciplinary subjects concerned with all aspects of the production, organisation, retrieval and communication of information.

Relevant and accurate information is now vital to society on a world-wide scale, and is recognised as a powerful and marketable commodity within a wide range of contexts from the information needs of individuals to that of multi-national companies. Today, information is required in almost every facet of life, so enhancing the employment prospects of those who choose to work in this area.

The growing need for information, has been paralleled by an information explosion on a wealth of topics, in numerous formats. As we approach the twenty first century the volume of new information produced annually is staggering. Developments in technology have created great possibilities in making an increasing amount of information more accessible to a greater number of people. It is now possible to retrieve information from sources across the globe through international databases and the communication of vast quantities of information, from the ephemeral to that required by serious academics, is now possible via the mass media or the Internet.
