Entrance Scholarships and Merit Awards

Since our foundation in 1872, the University has received generous donations and bequests which make it possible to financially assist students through the annual award of about 50 Entrance Scholarships and some 250 Merit Awards.

Do you think the hard work you've put into your studies up to now deserves some recognition?  If so, you should look into our Entrance Scholarship and Merit Award competition.  Winning a Scholarship at Aberystwyth University gives you the following benefits:

  • Up to £1,200 a year for EVERY YEAR of your studies

  • The security of an UNCONDITIONAL offer to study with us

  • GUARANTEED accommodation in a University residence for the duration of your course

Students who do not receive a Scholarship, but whose performance in these examinations is deserving of recognition, are offered Merit Awards which comprise: £1,000, payable in your first year of study, together with an Unconditional offer.

How do I apply?

  • The Entrance Scholarship and Merit Award competition requires you to sit two exams in two different subjects - we have 36 to choose from
  • The exams take place in February of every year, and can either be taken at Aberystwyth, or at your school or college.
  • You will need to return an Entrance Scholarship Application Form to us by 15th January.  (If you choose to print and complete this web application form, once we receive it we will complete an acknowledgement card for you and return it to you.  Please contact us one week after sending your application form to us if you have not received an acknowledgement card - this is your only proof that we have received your form).
I confirm I have read and understood the above and wish to download the application form
  • Remember to liaise with your Examinations Officer to ensure you are both aware of the exam arrangements, what papers you will be sitting etc.
  • Dates of the examinations in 2012 are:

Tuesday 7th, Wednesday 8th, and Thursday 9th February

  • If you are deferring your application to 2013, you can sit the exams in 2012 (and defer any award you receive) or in February 2013.
  • If you want an idea of the kind of questions which may be asked, have a look through our past Entrance Scholarship Exam Papers.
  • Full regulations for the Entrance Scholarship and Merit Award competition can be viewed in the Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards brochure  .
