Spanish Postgraduate Studies:

In recent years a number of graduates have chosen to pursue their postgraduate studies in Spanish at Aberystwyth, especially those with an interest in 19th Century, North African Spanish Novel and Latin American cinema.

Aberystwyth offers expert tuition in specialist areas of 19th century Spanish narrative and Latin American cinema. Aberystwyth also offers excellent facilities including the National Library of Wales (one of only five copyright libraries in the British Isles).

We offer postgraduate tuition and supervision in a range of topics leading to MA by Research, MPhil and PhD degrees. Students who embark on an MPhil or PhD will already have a clear notion of the topic they wish to research and a sound knowledge of its cultural context.

The full time MPhil normally takes two years, while a full-time PhD takes three years.

Finance:

For Ma by research, MPhil and PhD students the Aberystwyth University offers a number of Postgraduate Research Studentships which are applied for on a competitive basis, while eligible candidates (a good Upper Second Honours degree is a minimum requirement for funding) may also apply to the Arts and Humanities Research Board.

For further information and application forms (available from February) and for details of fees etc. contact us at: Eurolangs@aber.ac.uk http://www.aber.ac.uk/eurolangs/dept-info.shtml

Self-financing students should inquire about Career Development Loans which offer preferential rates to postgraduates (forms obtainable from Barclays and Cooperative banks) and they should also check on Charities and Trusts (Careers Library).

Prospective students should note in particular that Spanish is frequently able to offer postgraduates paid teaching hours to help offset expenses and there is normally a teaching assistant position in the department every year.

Types of Postgraduate Course:

The PhD is awarded on completion of a thesis of 100,000 words (maximum) on a chosen topic, text, author or theme. Normal duration of study for full-time postgraduates: three years (full time).

The MPhil is awarded on completion of a thesis of 60, 000 words (maximum) on a chosen topic, text, author or theme. Normal duration of study for full-time postgraduates is two years.
